Is it me or does everyone think that Smaug died a bit too quick? I guess it means that there's more evil to come but still, why did he have to die so quick without even killing a few (more?) people or something? It's a bit disappointing.

On page 269 in the black book, it says that "no arrow hindered Smaug or hurt him more than a fly from the marshes". If no other arrow hurt him, why could Bard's black arrow kill Smaug? That's probably a really stupid question, but it's confusing me.

So Bard killed Smaug. I find it very disappointing that Bilbo, our little hero, did not defeat Smaug himself. DO you think Bilbo had any role at all in Smaug's death. Not so much as being on the battlefield, but rather did he do anything before hand that vould have helped Smaug's demise?

In chapter 14 it says that the men of the Lake are cheerful and enthusiastic because they think that the river is running with gold. Although then they become suddenly aware that it is Smaug and his fire. So why did they think it was gold in the first place if they saw Smaug from far away?
