Like Smaug's rant on 203.... if there had been no weak spot on Smaug. His armour would have protected him from the arrows and Esgaroth would be in ashes. A couple ways that could've changed the book is there would be no fighting amongst the dwarves, elves, men for the whole affair of gold and compensation, there would be no ...war. How smaug got the weak spot in the first place it's like it said in the book on page 22, "Dragons can't make a thing for themselves, not even mend a little loose scale of their armour." Strong as Smaug is he is still somewhat helpless.
