On page 269 in the black book, it says that "no arrow hindered Smaug or hurt him more than a fly from the marshes". If no other arrow hurt him, why could Bard's black arrow kill Smaug? That's probably a really stupid question, but it's confusing me.

Because the only reason that arrow hurt him was because on page 250 in the little green book, The Thrush comes to Bard and says... "The moon is rising. Look for the hollow of the left breast as he flies and turns above you!" The little thrush told him about where his 'weak spot' was. And I think he might've found that out from Bilbo...? Cause Bilbo was the one to find it first.

Because on page 250 it says "Wait! Wait!" it said to him. "The moon is rising. Look for the hollow of the left breast as he flies and turns above you!" by the old thursh to Bard, so then Bard knew where to hit Smaug and with his best arrow (the black one) he shot and killed Smaug. So it was better because it hit Smaug's weak spot.
