Smaug

Why do you think Smaug went to the town??Do you think he just wanted to kill people or did he have a reason for going there??

At the end of Chapter twelve, he foreshadows (no, really tells us) about going to the lake to look for Bilbo and the Co.

On page 233 in the little green book, the very last of the chapter, "'Barrel rider!' He snorted. 'Your feet came from the waterside and up the water you came without a doubt. I don't know your smell, but if you are not one of those men of the lake, you had their help. They shall see me and remember who is the real king of the mountain!'" So he's telling us that he's going to Esgraoth (lake-town)

I don't think he went there to look for Bilbo and Co. because if he was going there to look for them why would he say "Barrel rider! Your feet came from the waterside and up the water you came without a doubt. I don't know your smell, but if you are not one of those men of the lake, you had their help. They shall see me and remember who is the real king of the mountain!" He wouldn't be talking to them if he thought they weren't there. The reason he went there is to get revenge like it says on page 233 in the little green book.

It says on pg 233 in the L.G.B. at the end of Not at Home

"'Barrel rider!' He snorted. 'Your feet came from the waterside and up the water you came without a doubt. I don't know your smell, but if you are not one of those men of the lake, you had their help. They shall see me and remember who is the real king of the mountain!'"

So yeah, he probably wanted to kill peoples, but his main purpose of going to the lake-town was most likely because he was angry that they helped the people that stole from him and made him angry.

In chapter 12 on pg 233, Smaug says, "But if you are not one of those men of the lake, you had thier help." I think he wanted to destroy them and the town because of that.

On page 233 it says that Smaug thought Thorin and co. were from the waterside from their feet
and called them barrel-riders and thought they had the help of the lake-men and was going to punish them.
