Why did Bilbo go down the tunnel by himself?

Jessica C · Jessica C

When Bilbo takes the Arkenstone, and keeps it a secret from the others , he seems slightly different than the simple, honest hobbit we first saw at the beginning of the book, not that he has bad intentions or anything. What certain characteristic(s) does he demonstrate then (taking the stone), or do...

Sean S · Sean S

What do you think Gandalf is doing all this time?

Andi W · Andi W

What does it mean by "Coat of mail"? MAIL? What do you think that means, or is there a form of "mail" that fits that situation?

Sean S · Sean S

Why don't you think Smaug burned Thorin and co. in the tunnel while he had the chance?

Shannon M · Shannon M

Why does Smaug love his treasure soooo much? I mean can he not share just a little with a poor little hobbit! So the question is why is Smaug obssesed with his treasure?

Katherine W · Katherine W

Why did Bilbo take the arkenstone? Do you think that the dwarves will find out? If so, what do you think that their reaction will be?

Courtney D · Courtney D

On page 256 in the black book, Tolkien talks about a "globe of pallid light". Is the light coming from the Arkenstone itself? Because when Bilbo takes it, you would think that the liight would disappear into his pocket with the stone. But if that were true, then woldn't the dwarves have real...

Chelsea N · Chelsea N

Do you think that Bilbo did the right thing by taking the jewland not telling Thorin? What do you think? I don't think that Bilbo did the right by taking the jewl. He should have told Thorin, because Thorin already rewarded Bilbo by giving him that mail.

Lindsay E · Lindsay E

pg 214. Do you think that Bilbo said it was oinly a bat that hit him to reassure himself or to make the dwarves think he wasn't a chicken?+

Kyle H · Kyle H

On page 226 in my book it says that Bilbo put the LARGE and HEAVY gem in his deepest pocket. Since Bilbo is small how would a large and heavy gem not be seen bulging out of his pockets. Does he just have really super baggy pants? Your thoughts.

TJB · TJB

Do you think Bilbo should be the real leader of the dwarves instead of Thorin or not? Explain.

Chloe V · Chloe V

What is the Arkenstone? I know that's probably a really dumb question, but I would like to know!

Eric S · Eric S

What effect did Thorin giving him the suit of mail have on Bilbo and his attitude toward the current situation?

Andi W · Andi W

For # 5 in Chapter 13 (Explain the significance of this chapter's title.), the Tilte is "Not at Home". So I understand that they are NOT AT HOME, but is there some little hidden meaning that I didn't catch that is really significant?

Pamela T · Pamela T

When Bilbo found the Arkenstone why didn't he tell anyone? Was he being selfish? What are your thoughts?

Andi W · Andi W

I know that the Arkenstone is the gem that Bilbo picked up, but is it also a place in the mountain? Becasue on page 237 the book sadi, "It was the Arkenstone, the Heart of the Mountain." By "the Heart" does that means like the middle of the mountain, or am I just completely wrong.......

Megan T · Megan T

What do you think the dwarves would do if they found out that Bilbo took the Arkenstone without telling them? I know that they won't be too happy, but what are your thoughts? (:

Katie B · Katie B

On page 240 Bilbo said "I never thought I would be looking out of this door," What do you think he ment?!

Kate M · Kate M

Why do you think that Bilbo thought he had a right to the Arkenstone? What makes him think that?

Katie B · Katie B

On page 238 in the little green book Thorin says to Bilbo "Mr.Baggins! Here is the first payment of your reward!Cast off your old coat and put this on!!"Do you think that was hir first and only reward or do you think that the will reward him more?!

Haley M · Haley M

When the dwarves and Bilbo were out of the mountain where was Smaug? What was he doing because the dwarves and Bilbo said that they had no idea where he was. What do you think Smaug was doing at the time?

Ashlee S · Ashlee S

Do you think there is something behind the reason Biblo took the Arkenstone? Do you think he'll tell someone and Smaug will find out?

Lexus W · Lexus W

When Bilbo made the comment, " I hope he(Smaug) is not up on the Mountain looking down at us.", how do yoy think you would have reacted to that statement. Would you have freaked out, stayed calm, or would you have been scared, but did not show it.

Chad S · Chad S

What do you think Bilbo will do Arkenstone, do you think he will keep it forever and not tell anyone, or will he tell them after the adventure is over? Do you think that if he tells them they will get mad at them for not telling them?
