When Bilbo found the Arkenstone why didn't he tell anyone? Was he being selfish?
What are your thoughts?
He knew that he was going to have to tell them sometime I think he just chose not to right that second and it says so on pg 201-202. I don't know if he was being selfish or not but it said that they had said that he could choose his share of the treasure and this is wanted he would take only this and leave the rest to the dwarves as it also says on page 201-202.

pg 237-238: Not at Home in the LGB
("Now I am a burgular indeed!" thought he. "But I suppose I must tell the dwarves about it-some time. They did say I could pick and choose my own share; I think I would choose this if they took all the rest!" All the same he had an uncomfortable feeling that the picking and choose had not really bee meant to include this marvolous gem, and that trouble would yet come of it.)
Here we see Biblo trying to reassure himself that he is allowed to take the Arkenstone even though his common sense is telling him that he shouldn't. I guess you could say he was being a bit selfish. He knew Thorin would want it, and yet he took it for himself anyway. He did however, eventually use for good when he gave it to Bard/King to stop the fighting. Apparently Gandalf agreed with him too:
pg273-274
"Well done! Mr.Baggins!" he said clapping Bilbo on the back. "There is always more to you that anyone expects!"
YaY Bilbo! Whew! That's a long answer! Thank chuzzle we don't have to write this stuff!
