When Bilbo takes the Arkenstone, and keeps it a secret from the others , he seems slightly different than the simple, honest hobbit we first saw at the beginning of the book, not that he has bad intentions or anything. What certain characteristic(s) does he demonstrate then (taking the stone), or do you think there isn't much of a difference?
