"An old man, wrapped in a dark cloak..."

Pg273 in the LGB

At the end of "A Thief in the Night", Gandalf "rose from a tent door and came towards them." I hadn't noticed the "them" until I reread it on accident. While Gandalf and Biblo have their "mini conversation" , Bard and the Elvenknig are no longer mentioned.
If they had overheared what Gandalf said about "There is news brewing that even the ravens have not heard." why do you think they didn't question him further, like Biblo did? Or had they departed right when they saw him? This minisculio piece of the story confuses me. Who has any ideas?confused.gif
