What is the Arkenstone? I know that's probably a really dumb question, but I would like to know!
Okay back on page 231 it says that the Arkenstone is "Heart of the Mountain". It says it shone like silver in the firelight, like water in the moon, like snow under the stars, like rain upon the moon! It is the jewel that Thorin wants especially bad.

Chloe, I agree with Eric, that the Arkenstone is definitely a jewel that Thorin wants really bad, but I also think that the reason Thorin wants it is because on page 256 in the black book, we discover that it was "cut and fashioned by the dwarves". Thorin's ancestors made that incredible jewel into what it is today, and they perished long ago along with Dale. Thorin probably feels that it is a memento of his family and friends from long ago.
Wow. I didnt even really answer the question. Oh well. Whatevs.
