I think he really did think it was the bat because on page 238 in my book (3rd paragraph) He actually reassures himself by saying "Only a bat I suppose and hope!" and that was before he even called for the dwarves' help.

Are you talking about page 238? There isn't anything on page 214 about bats.
Oh I think it actually was a bat, because I don't know what else it could have been, if it was an actual object, not just fear. I don't think he could actually imagine being hit by something though. Page 238 says, "He was just going to turn around and go back, when a black shape swooped at him...." so if he saw "a black shape" then it wasn't just fear.
