I think Smaug is very arrogant. He has all the treasure he could want so he's very stuck up. He is easily flattered by Bilbo's compliments and that makes me feel that he is self centered and snooty.

When i first read "Smaug" I thought of some mean and selfish dragon, which is kinda what he is..Yea scales shine like the treasure..that's fits him.
