Okay.If Smaug smelt Bilbo, why didn't he just kill him right away?!Do you think that he was just testing Bilbo's fear level?!

On page #217-218 (in the little green book) Smaug is trying to kill Bilbo after he wakes up and notices that the cup is gone, but Bilbo had already left when he woke up, and then he couldn't find Bilbo. Then, on page #227 after Bilbo comes back down because he thinks Smaug will be sleeping, Smaug tries again to kill him, but the book says, "It was an unfortunate remark... and stumbled blindy on in great pain and fear." (look up in the book, because it is too long to type)
So Smaug was trying to kill Bilbo, Bilbo was just lucky (again).

He didn't kill Bilbo because he was curious about what he was and what he wanted. I mean, he probally hasn't had visitors in a long time so when this wierd, unfamilar smelling and invisible thing comes along, he's intrigued.
