Elrond says it at the end of chapter 3. Page 52 in my book. He is talking to the dwarves and reads it on the map.

It was the evening of durin's day, when the sun was setting I tyhink. The sun mad the door crack a bit and then they used a key.

He said that moonlight would show the keyhole and... it did! After the moonlight shone down on the rocks it cracked open and there was the keyhole. I'm not sure how though.

Elrond is reading their map and part of it says
"Stand by the grey stone when the thrush knocks and the setting sun with the last light of Durin's Day will shine upon the key-hole"

Mkay.
-We have the grey stone (the door)
-A thrush cracking open a snail (knocking)
-a setting sun
-Thorin and Bilfur discussing the time of the year (It's Durin's Day!)

*YES, this means the door could only be opened once a year.
*What a CoInKyDiNk that they made it JUST IN TIME? Cuz' if ANYWHERE along the way their trip was delayed ONE day, they might have had to cancel the whole thing!
