-Why do you think that Bilbo just sits there and doesn't help the others?!
What do you mean he doesnt do anything????He's the only one who does anything,I mean he's the one who found out how to open the door and he's the one who saved them from the wood-elves.
-Why do you think that Bilbo just sits there and doesn't help the others?!
If you are talking about why in general he doesn't help the others, you need to reread chapters 8 and 9 because he saved them big time. If you are talking about why on page 208 (in the little green book) he doesn't help the others, it is because he is just trying to think of a way to open the door.

I think Bilbo has done his fair share of helping. He has basically been dragged into an adventure that he never wanted to take in the first place and has stepped up and saved these dwarves that he hardly even knows. So as for Bilbo not helping I think he has helped tremendously. On page 189 in my book it talks about Bilbo just sitting there thinking. So if that is what you are refering to then I think he is helping just as much as anybody and is actually trying to come up with a way to open the door.
-Why do you think that Bilbo just sits there and doesn't help the others?!
He does help them. It says that he was sitting on the doorstep because in the beginning of the book, he told them to sit on the doorstep & think, so that's what he was doing.
And he's the only one who remembered to wait for the sun to set or whatever, and unlock the door.

I agree with what Ashley said about him thinking and not doing nothing. He is just musing over what to do and how to save them all AGAIN. He obviously isn't doing nothing, because he ends up figuring out how to open the door instead of just whining and complaining like everyone else.

Well if you are reffering to before they opened the door then it says on page 208 that Thorin told Bilbo to sit and think of ways to get the door open.

-Why do you think that Bilbo just sits there and doesn't help the others?!
It would be a little unfair and improper to say that Bilbo just sits there and doesn't help others. I do believe that Bilbo has contributed a large proportion to this wild adventure. He has departed from his warm and unseperable hobbit-hole to become adventurous and a theif which is way out of his ordinary demeanor. In the defense of Bilbo, I must say that Bilbo has helped and rescued the dwarfs countless times. Without Bilbo, the group probably wouldn't have made it to their destination. So to conclude my presumtion, I say that Bilbo has not just say there and dont nothing.
