Why doesn't Smaug have the secret door bloked up already? Also why does he have to smash the whole thing.
I don't know what page its on, but it was a while ago that it said that Smaug was to big to fit through the door so he may not have thought about others that could fit through it.:

but he knows that dwarves where there before him, so shouldn't he have guessed that someone or something maybe that size would try to recapture the gold and the mountain?

He says, on page 217 paragraph 2 in my book, that "... He had never been quite happy about it, though it was so small..." I think it's partly because it's more of one of those trivial 'I really should get to that' type thing, because it's so small, but how would he be able to close it anyway?

I'm not entirely sure but maybe he is just not very bright when it comes down to it. All he wants to do is destroy the dwarves and Bilbo od that's why he has to knock down the whole thing.
