I think that it is both, i think he got lucky at times during the escape, but he also thought the plan out. I think that it was really smart, i would have never thought of doing that.

yes that was all part of his plan thats why he even started to free them because he heard that the barrels leave the town and then he planned out how to set them free!!

I don't think he thoughtit out too much, i think it was more of an A to B type thing ans he would ghet into detail in the spur of the moment.
And i think it was the best idea because the dwarves probably wouldn't have survived otherwise.
