Why did the spiders continue to chase Bilbo even though they could not see him? Also why only one guard watching the dwarves?
The spiders were being taunted and insulted so maybe they thought Bilbo was just hiding. As for the one gaurd i have no idea unless they didn't think that there was any danger.
