I don't think he would have gotten out alive becase the ring made him invisible, so if he wasn't invisisble, the gaurds would have seen him and gotten him.

Is that a trick question? The Hobbit is a companion book to The Lord of the RINGS. I'd imagine it's pretty important.
And of course there is the forshadowing of Bilbo's hesitancy to tell Gandalf and the dwarves about the ring.
Hahah, I agree, I wondered why he wouldn't want to tell them about the ring he found, I would want to tell someone. I freaked when I found some Hobbit ring in my bag & told everyone, I don't know why he wouldn't. So, we'll see:)
