When they escape the trolls because Bilbo is wanting for adventure a some points and not at others,but he also wants to help the dwarves and feels sorry that they lost most of their provisions in the river.

Bilbo leaves the comfort of his hobbit hole in The Hill for a world of adventure. I guess the crossing of the threshold would be the meeting with the trolls. They are tryingto stop Bilbo from going on, by perhaps eating him. Bilbo realizes he can not go back after stealing their weapons and continues through the mountatins.

I think for me he is leaving that safe and securelifestyle and ccrossing over into a more adventurous and dangerous lifestyle with the dwarves and Gndalf.
