i think that it is where he is like i smaugs lair or in the goblins lair but they are both risking his life alot more than other thing they do in the adventure like where he can die in a split second i mean smaug could of shot one fire ball and probably killed him because he knew that bilbo was standing right at the entrace i mean that is the only way e knew how to get out at the time
