Here's another thing I've been pondering...

Especially for those of you who are big Harry Potter fans AND who have read/seen the other stories in The Lord of the Rings trilogy...

Let's compare and contrast Gandalf and Dumbledore. I can't remember now who it was - Kayla, I think, who even answered some questions early on using "Dumbledore" instead of "Gandalf"...honest mistake! The are very, very similar....

Your thoughts, please...

Yuhh, Gandalf and Dumbledore are pretty alike.
I like Dumbledore more though.
I think it's because I've read seven books with Dumbledore in them,
and only one book with Gandalf.

Actually, the man who played Gandalf in the Lord of The Rings movies
is now playing Dumbledore because the man that used to play Dumbledore passed away.

Well i think they are very similar because Gandalf provides help with the dwarves and Bilbo just as Dumbledore provides help for Harry and Ron & Hermionie.

Wow. Never thought of it that way.
Now that I think about it though... I even imagine them LOOKING the same.

Gandalf often "leaves" for random reasons unknown.
Same with Dumbledore. In The Half-Blood Prince, Dumbledore often leaves for reasons "unknown." (Unless you've finished the series of course =P)

Dumbledore is a lot more powerful than Gandalf and uses more magic. Gandalf seems more energetic and younger ( hough they're both very old). Both of them are all knowing and always calm, prepared, and unexpectedly surprising. Dumbledore seems more lighthearted and primeval. Dumbledore is probably more known than Gandalf.

Its crazy now that I think about it Dumbledore and Gandalf are exactly the same they both guide someone in their stories they both do extrodinary things they can both do magic and both are wizards the only dfference I can think of is is that Dumbledore dies and Gadalf lives.

I thnk they are very similar because they both watch out for the main charcters in the book. Dumbledore acts as Harry's mentor and Gandalf acts as Bilbo's mentor. Without Dumbledore and Gandalf the main charcters would be extremely lost. sushi.gif

They both are great wizards with powerful magic, have long white beards grandma.gif and assist hero's on their quests. They are both patient too. smile.gif Although Gandalf seems to be a Nomad and Dumbledore lived in Hogwarts for most of the time. They Both belong to organizations. weirdface.gif Like the Order of the Phoneix and Gandalf's organization of wizards. They could almost be brothers!

Okay well I have a feeling that everyone is going to scream at me when I say that I have no idea who Dumbledore is, so I'll give it a shot...

Ummm... well Courtney told me that Dumbledore is a powerful wizard and so is Gandalf. Gandalf assisted Bilbo in his adventure just like Dumbledore assisted Harry and he was his mentor. He also let Harry figure things out on his own and Gandalf did the same thing. Although I do have some questions:
1) Do Gandalf and Dumbledore work together in the Harry Potter movies?
2) Also was Dumbledore at the meeting with all the wizards when Gandalf had pressing business to attend? Or was he not even in the story?

ok well I think that that dumbledore and gandalf are very similar! they both are wizards and are kinda secretive at times. Dumbledore seems more caring and seems like a father to me and gandalf is just there and doesn't do that much to be a loving friend kinda person.biggrin.gif

I don't really know who Dumbledore is so i can't answer this question but i'll give it a try.

All i no is that Dunbledore is a powerful wizard who helps Harry and Gandalf is a powerful wizard who helps Bilbo. They were both mentors to the heroes. dumbledore is always helping Harry while Gandalf had to attend to some business. He made Harry do a lot of things on his own unlike Gandalf who usually did everything for Bilbo & CO. They both protect the hero. All my info came from Courtney!!

This is the best i could do from info i just learned about Dumbledore.

Well,Dumbledore and Gandalf are very much alike. For example,Gamdalf helped Bilbo in his journey with guindance and wisdom. Dumbledore was Harry's protecter,he gave him advice and guidance as did Gamdalf for Bilbo. They share similar apperances. They both have long white beards, tall, old, and so much more. Gandalf let Bilbo figure things out for himself vs. just giving him the answer to his problem. Dumbledore did the same for Harry. spin.gif

I agree that Dumbledore and Gandalf are that similar. Obviously, the fact that they are both wizards. Dumbledore is there supporting Harry the whole time, except in Half Blood Prince and obviously Deathly Hallows, but Gandalf seems almost aloof. Gandalf kind of has to tell Bilbo stuff, whereas Dumbledore lets Harry figure things out on his own. At some point though, both wizards disappear for seemingly unknown reasons. They differ in the big fact that, unfortunately, Dumbledore's dead, and Gandalf is living. They both are uber fabulous, though I think I still like Dumbledore better. Dumbledore died without just handing Harry everything he needed to know because first, Dumbledore didnt know everything, and second, there was still much for Harry to learn in his seventh year, even though he wasnt actually at Hogwarts until the end. Gandalf, on the other hand, felt that it was ok for Bilbo to be given everything he neede to know, whether it was given to him by Gandalf himself or Elrond, or whoever. Bilbo ends up figuring out extra stuff though, that does indeed help him, such as the hole in Smaug's tummy.

Miss Courtney lick.gif Haha. Thats kinda funny.

Yeah they are very alike. They both always seem to know everything before it is told to them and everybody respects them because they are so wise and powerful. Like, for example Gandalf seemed to know that Bilbo had the ring and Dumbledore has this all knowing sense about him like in the chamber of secrets when dealing with Harry and the mirror---- ahh its kinda hard to explain- hope i did it ok

Gandalf carries a staff, Dumbeldore does not.
They both are good wizards.
Gandalf uses his hands for his magic, Dumbeldore uses a wand but can use his hands.lick.gif

I never really thought about that. But wow. They do have a lot in commom. They're both obviously wizards, but they both help out the hero in alot of ways. Dumbledore sometimes ended up saving Harry's skin, and Gandalf helped Biblo and the dwarves alot too.

I never thought of that. Gandalf and Dumbledore are very much alike arent they. Well lets see they can both do magic, they both see potential an two other characters, they both even look alike, they are seem to slip away when needed most, they are very Sagacious(haha),they help along journeys(so to speak),and they both are very nice people,oh yeah and they are both wizards! So yep those are my thoughts.

Gandalf and Dumbledore are Extremely simular. with ethe berd and the magic and not to mention the serious/caring/criptic atatude and personality. If they were to stand side by side I doubt I could tell them apart! dizzy.gif

Well obviously they are both wizards, and they are both the mentor or supernatural aid to the main character, but I think that their personalities are pretty different. For example: Dumbledore always seems to have a plan for everything that is all worked out and he always has everything under control. Gandalf however kind of just tries to wing it when problems arise, and hope that it works out. I also think that Dumbledore is a much more caring, gentle person than Gandalf and much more likeable.

Gandolf and Dumbledore are kind of alike. They both leave for unsupected reason, but I think Gandolf leaves at points in time to where you'll never know when he will return.Dumbledore on the other hand gives Harry kind of a heads up to when he will go.So basically Gandolf is a little bit more cryptic than Dumbledore.

If you think about it, Dumbledore is like Gandalf, not Gandalf is like Dumbledore... Yeah. Let's see, they're both wizards or magical peoples, they're normally gone whenever the hero needs them, they have their own business, they believe in the hero and his actions... some other stuff. So, yeah, they are alike, a lot.

Well, their both wizards, in a "wizardly" fashion (long white beard, robe, hat, magic) and both of them help the hero very much throughout their journey. (Supernatural Aid). Both of them play an very similar role, but they do it with very different personalities.Gandalf is more well, strict and distant, and simply points Biblo in the right direction, while Dumbledore acts on a more personal, caring level, and is willing to share secrets with Harry, tell him of the past, and look after him.

Okay so it appears that I might have gotten Dumbledore and Hagred mixed up on my last post! I am very callow in the area of Harry Potter so I'm going to try this again. Gandalf and Dumbledore are both wizards, they are old, they give advice and/or warnings to the hero, they have beards, and are in charge of a group. Dumbledore is in charge of the school and Gandalf is in charge of the dwarves(sort of). Without really reading the books or watching the movies I can't think of any other sufficient simmilarities.biggrin.gif

I think Dumbledore and Gandalf are very much the same because they're both wizards and they're both mentor like friends to the main character in their book. Oh yeh and the both have long white beards.

Let's compare and contrast Gandalf and Dumbledore. I can't remember now who it was - Kayla, I think, who even answered some questions early on using "Dumbledore" instead of "Gandalf"...honest mistake! The are very, very similar....

Your thoughts, please...

Dumbledore is I think a little older and uses a wider varitey of magic other than lights and flashes. Gandalf uses a little more variety in the other movies and books than this one.

Dumbledore is just a really good wizard, but Gandalf is a Maiar, one of the lesser Ainur created by Iluvatar. The Valar are also Ainur of greater power, and they made middle earth and the rest of the LotR world.

They both have long white beards, are wizards, and are very wise but Gandalf might be taller, does not have glasses like Dumbledore does, and is adventurous.

They are almost exactly the same I wouldn't have ever thought to compare them until you said this. Both of them pop up whenever one of them needs help, and they are both wizards and they use magic.
