Gandalf and Bilbo

At the beginning of the novel, Gandalf remarks that Bilbo has more in him than would appear, more than Bilbo himself realizes. What DOES Bilbo have in him?

Bilbo has the blood of the Tooks!
So he's more adventurous than he knows,
more adventurous than everyone thinks he is, at least.

I think that Bilbo has more Took in him than he expected. As the story progressed, Bilbo became more in touch with his bravery, and was more willing to take risks, which would bring them closer to the ultimate boone. clap.gif

He has that sort of Tookish side to him.In the beginning Bilbo was very caustious of his surroundings, and toward the end he let go of his fears. When he thought of himself as brave. He really proved the dwarves wrong, and showed that he can handle things that are more powerful and greater than him.

Uh... he has wits? Courage? The adventurous side of him! I had thought that Gandalf knew about the ring long before, but maybe not.

Took? He is more adventurous than he appears as the novel go on he becomes more and more comfortable with what he is and has to do. He starts to let the took side of him show in his decisions and actions.

He has bravery that springs up at all the right times. He has luck that saves him more times than he can count. He's very creative in terms of coming up with ideas of how to free the dwarves and such. He has the magic ring which pretty much gets him through a lot.

I think Bilbo has potential. That's why Gandalf picked him. The dwarves thought he was hopeless but it turned out that he was a great burglar. Bilbo doesn't even know he had potential but it really came out in the end.

I would say LUCK but I think Bilbo knows he's kind of lucky. Bravery seems kind of obvious but he did say he didn't think he was a good burgular so maybe he doesn't realize he's brave. I wonder how Gandalf knows what Bilbo has in him.

The luck of a million people (hyperbole) and the future finding of the ring. Bilbo was always lucky, then he found the ring and his luckiness/skills increased ten-fold.

I think Bilbo has more adventure or took in him then he first realized. It takes a while for him to come out of his shell, but eventually he does step up and be a leader. A lot of the timing of when he steps up is dependent on finding the ring and Gandalf leaving. It just takes a little support from Gandalf to realize he can. Gandalf knew this all along and that is the main reason he picked Bilbo.biggrin.gif

He has the Tookish side in him. IT makes him more adventurous and he is able to go on a journey and return, kind of missing it.

He has always had the courage to do the things he did on his journey but he never had anything pushing him to use it. Not to mention he's the luckiest person in the world.

He has more courage and liveliness in him than he thought a hobbit could have. Throughout the book he gained more and more courage in himself.

Since Bilbo had never gone on any adventures, he didn't think he could do it at all. But he had courage to face dragons and fight huge nasty spiders, he just didn't know he had it because he never got to use it. HE HAS HEART!! haha

Bilbo is a quiet little hobbit minding his own business when suddenly all of these dwarves and Gandalf start approaching him to tell him to come on their adventure. So he definitely became more adventurous throughout the book and he also became more brave, had more courage, and heoric. Even though he was a shy little hobbit, Gandalf knew that he had all of this in him from the start.

Bilbo has the "ring of truth", his invisible ring. He also has the ability to unleash his inner Took!
Bilbo had not yet realized his strengths. He has strong will, quick wits, and bravery like no other.

And he's just a good leader, I guess something you don't realize when you're living alone in a hole under a hill.

Bilbo actually turns out to be really brave and couragous, and he in a way has the fitting to be a leader. He is a lot different compared to a normal hobbit.
