Did Bilbo give up the Arkenstone because he thought it was the right thing to do?
Do you think he made a good decission?
Bilbo says on page 273 in the little green book "This is the Arkenstone of Thrain, the Heart of the Mountain; and it is also the heart of Thorin. He values it above a river of gold. I give it to you. It will aid you in your bargaining." So I think Bilbo gives it to The Elvenking and Bard because he knows that with the Arkenstone, Thorin will be more likely to accept one of their deals and they can avoid war and starvation and probably death only if they make a deal. I think it was a good decesion because if he hadn' t probably all of the company would have died, except Bilbo would could probably escape with the ring.

On page 428 in my very big book Bilbo says "I will give it to you. It will aid your bargaining." Previously Bard had gone up to the front gate to "Bargain" with Thorin, but Thorin was being selfish and wouldn't give him any of the treasure. I think that made Bilbo mad because Bard had helped them by killing the dragon so I think he was giving it to them as like a peace offering.

I think that Bilbo did the right thing and meant no harm because in page 230 in my book he doesn't want to stay even though he would be in much more comfort so he won't worry his friends and he has to wake up Bombur. And he is really guilty for giving away the stone because he shudders as he gives it to Bard.
1. Do you think Thorin will think of Bilbo as an enemy or will he be really really angry at first then understand his reasoning.
2. Do you think the other dwarves will understand why Bilbo did what he did?
