Why do you think Bilbo had talk in a mysterious way when dealing with Smaug? Why couldn't he just say who he was?
I think he did not say his name so Smaug would not be able to find the people Bilbo cared about and also so if he succeeded in stealing Smaug's gold Smaug would not be able to find him if he did not kill him.
Why do you think Bilbo had talk in a mysterious way when dealing with Smaug? Why couldn't he just say who he was?
Darling, I think that Bilbo was all secretive because he didnt want Smaug to find out who he was and harm all those that had helped him along his journey. I think this because Bilbo gets upset with himself when he discovers that it was really obvious to say Barrel-rider because the only place barrels come from was the wood-elves.

Because on page 223 it says "This of course is the proper way to talk to dragons, if you don't want to reveal your proper name (which is wise)"
Obviously, he didn't want to put himself or the dwarves in danger by stating who he really was, but did not want to upset Smaug by refusing to tell him who he was.
But then again, he pretty much did tell Smaug who he was, because he gave it away in his riddles, by saying "Barrel-rider" and "Ringwinner and Luckwearer" The last one made me laugh when I read it, cause he switched it around:D
