"Theives! Fire! Murder! Such a thing had not happened since first he came to the mountain!"
This one little piece confuzzled me. (pg217)
Thieves-he's a thief.
Fire- He breathes fire
Murder- Don't innocent people and troops of ponies count?
Care to clarify please?
I think what Smaug means is like "ahhh! There are thieves!" and then, "I want to use fire to murder them." I don't think he means Bilbo is a thief, a murderer, and fire (or an arsonist).

I think it means more along the lines of the fact that no one has dared to even challenge him since he has taken control. It seems that as the dwarves have been on their adventure everyone knows Smaug and fears him, but no one has actually tried to contest him since Thorin's grandfather. So I think he is saying that this is the first time that he has had some one come and try to steal his gold and has been forced to use fire and murder.
