How do you think Bilbo knows about dragon-lore if he didn't even know who Smaug was in the beginning of the book?

I took it as Bilbo just used common sense to not to tell him information about himself. I might be wrong though, maybe he did know dragon-lore all along and was just not speaking out about it at the beginning. I don't know, I'm just confusing myself evn more.
