How does Smaug keep track of all his treasure? I know he notices right away that the chalice is gone and I don't get how. What does he do all day, except count his treasure? Do you think he is a intelligent creature or just a big dragon that wants all the shiny things to show his dominance? I know that he has some degree of intelligence, but can he talk?

Well I finished chapter 12 and it answered my question about smaug's intelligence so I don't know if this still counts as a post or what

Om page 212 in my book it has Bilbo and Smaug talking about him. And it probably is just dragon magic that lets him know how much treasure he has.

I think it is sort of a dragons intuition. In most stories, the one to guard the treasure is the first one to notice it missing. I think he just is attatched to his hoard so much, he knows if there are any changes. Kind of scary but it says in the book. "Then he missed the cup....His rage passes description-the sort of rage that is only seen in rich folk that have more than they can enjoy and suddenly lose something they have long had but have never before used or wanted." Its a long metophor but it compares him to the right thing.

Well, I think Smaug the "mighty dragon" is really lazy and fat and probably has really slow reflexes....but i think he knew the chalice was gone because he could smell Bilbo's scent. He probably is really smart because HE CAN TALK. (atleast i think he can.....)
