On page 175 it says, "They all thought their own shares in the treasure would suffer seriously if the Wood-elves claimed part of it, and they all trusted Bilbo. Just what Gandalf had said would happen, you see. Perhaps that was part of his reason for going off and leaving them."
Do you think that part of the reason (or the only reason) Gandalf left them was to make them trust Bilbo? Do you think, if that was part of the reason, Gandalf will rejoin them once they trust Bilbo for the rest of their journey?

I think that might be part of the reason Gandalf keeps leaving. I deffinitely think Gandalf has pressing buisiness elswhere He is pretty suspicious after all! I think the dwarves have quite a bit of trust in Bilbo already though!

I think that that is a good explanation because Gandalf's "presiing business" sounds a little bogus to me. I think that since Gandalf has been gone the dwarves have really been forced to put their trust in Bilbo. So far Bilbo hasn't let them down. From what I can tell it sounds as if Gandalf is on his way back. I wonder when he will return?

I found this on page 191 of my text:
"...they all trusted Bilbo. Just what Gandalf had said would happen, you see. Perhaps that was part of his reason for going off and leaving them."
I think ol' Gandalf knows what's up!

I think that Gandalf just wanted Bilbo to try everything on his own, and if Bilbo continues saving his friends there would be no need for Gandalf to come back.

I do not think that was all of the reason that he left and believe that Gandalf really had pressing business elsewhere and I think he would return after Bilbo stole the treasure.
