How do you think that this chapter would have changed if Bilbo had lost the ring? How would he have slipped from the elves, and if he would have, how would he have helped his friends get out and he jump onto the barrel without being seen?

The chapter would be very different, he wouldn't have been able to lurk around the kingdom for 2 weeks, or get the keys from the butler or the guard or whatever, or get all the dwarves out of prison, or grab onto the barrell, OR steal food when he hit the shore.

I think that the whole chapter would have been completely different. All the dwarves would still be locked up, and Bilbo would be locked up with them. Pretty much the only thing that makes Bilbo a good burgular, is his ability to be invisible. By himself, he probably couldnt have done much.
