Gandalf is a wizard, Bilbo is a hobbit, and Thorin and Co. are all dwarves. We already know that Gollum is a species of his own, but what exactly is Beorn? Is he like Gollum, a species of his own, or did something happen that like, mutated him? I know he's a man-bear, but how did he get that way?

Maybe he was a human but his compassion for all animals turned him into a shape shifter. Maybe. Maybe he was a bear but he somehow got turned into a human/bear.

I think he's like Gollum in a way with the whole "own species". I think that some evil wizard turned him into a man-bear thing...
HAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! a "man-bear". that's funny. I always thought that he would be like some kind of midget ogar or something. But i like man-bear way better!!!!![spoiler]

He's a skin changer. It says so in the book on page 115 & 116. Those are the pages in my book. TEXT EVIDENCE! :)
"He is very strong, and he is a skin-changer." "He changes his skin:sometimes he is a huge black bear, sometimes he is a strong black-haired man with huge arms and a great beard."

On pages 115-116 Gandalf says that Beorn is a skin-changer. I think means that it just his species, and there is like a lot of other animals like him who can just change into random things. :)
