Ahhh good question! The answer is a resounding YES, although the ring is not the primary focus of this novel. It is very, very powerful - it was created by a very powerful, very bad necromancer and it's not the only one of its kind...

I think it is something that could be true. It could slowly drive you crazy and that could be a power. Too much power can drive you crazy.
