Bilbo and the Ring

If Bilbo has worn the ring, how come he hasn't had any addiction to it yet? Or does it take time to turn a person crazy after they have worn it?

Well maybe because he's a Hobbit, that wont happen to him? I dont think the ring makes a person crazy, in Gollums case, thats because he was alone all the time.

Too funny - I wondered exactly the same thing last night while reading The Hobbit with my son. First, I'll argue that the ring doesn't make people crazy - it wasn't the ring that made Gollum the way that he is. The ring does, however, possess great power - very little of which is even addressed in this book.

I think that Bilbo's too good to have turned so evil, and since he's trying to keep it hidden, maybe he's become less addictable?

The ring only has a strong hold on those who are physically strong and arrogant and not very strong minded. Bilbo is so very "I'm so smart" and no so very "I'm so cool" so it doesn't have any crazy hold on him -- yet.hmm.gifI think I got right.

I think since right now Bilbo isn't trying to destroy the ring the Necromancer is fine with him having the ring since he's busy. But, when Frodo gets the ring and is trying to destroy it, Sauron (now in the Lord of the Rings) suddenly wants to get his ring back so he tries to slow Frodo on his adventure and make him give up on it.matrixfight.gif
