Gandalf...

Okay, first off, I have no clue if this is already a topic, although I'm sure it's not, and I'm too lazy to check so here.

Does Gandalf like show up at the moment Bilbo and the dwarves need him most or something? Like during the troll conflict in the second chapter where Gandalf disguised his voice, saving them from the trolls just as they were about to be cooked. And then the second time in the 4th chapter where Gandalf came bursting in with Orcrist and his wand wielded and shooting, saving the dwarves and Bilbo from the goblins. Does Gandalf liberally plan to come at the 'right' moment or is it just luck that the dwarves and Bilbo have?

Okay, if Gandalf is a wizard why can he only use his power sometimes? Like when he was throwing the fire at the wolves, he used magic, so why couldn't he just throw water at the goblins when they tried to catch their trees on fire? And mabey there are rules or something about making food appear, but why can't he use his magical powers to get them more arrows to shoot food, or to get another boat to get the deer or bring the boat back to them so they can go get the deer? It just doesn't make sense... confused.gif

I think Gandalf is like a parent, teacher, or coach. He only helps the party when they are in a situation that they cant resolve on their own. If he did everything for them they would not learn to be self-reliant. Although he has magical powers he cant be with them at all times. Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime

Well, gee. It all seems so coincidental. weirdface.gif Well, of course without Gandalf, our hero would have failed a long time ago. I also see the point on how Gandalf is like a parent, stepping in when they can not bare it. But what, may I ask, do you think would happen without Gandalf there? What solutions would they have? Very few, if any. I also think Tolkien is trying to show how dependent Bilbo and the dwarves are on him. I think he's trying to portray characters that have their strengths but also have weaknesses. Make sense?

I guess there have to be some unspoken ruleor something... yeh it's kinda blurry but if he could just do everything there wouldn't be much of a story, now would there?

Thorin asks Gandalf how he managed to come comes back in the nick time to rescue the party from the trolls. Gandalf answered he ran into a couple of friends who were hurrying along for fear of Trolls. Gandalf then got a feeling he was needed back. He spotted a campfire and made for that. It was the Trolls fire.
The book states (page 100 in my book) that Gandalf made a special study of bewitchments with fire and lights. That would lead me to believe that he is not all-powerful but must develop each of his powers. Do not doubt the integrity of wizards.
