Does Bilbo at some point face something that tempts him to leave the path on the way to his Ultimate Boon?
Would Smaug trying to get him mad at the dwarves be the temptation? He does tempt Bilbo to stop trying to steal his treasure... but he isn't in female!

I agree. Smaug did try to convince Bilbo to not trust the dwarves and all of that other stuff he said about them. Also what about the lights that lead them off the path?
