Why do you think, instead of Gollum just eating Biblo right away, did they do they riddles game? What would you do if you where in both Gollum and Biblo's place? Im really confused, so that im mused over, how did Gollum get the ring in the first place? I really need to know!
I think instead of Gollum just eating Bilbo right away, they did the riddles game because Gollum wanted to be fair and deep down inside underneath all of that craziness, he is a good person or so to speak, and Gollum wanted to give Bilbo the benifit of the doubt of eating him right away. If I were in Gollum's place, I probably would have eaten Bilbo right away thinking he was delicious and delectible. If I were in Bilbo's place, I would have ran away just as he did. I dont actually know how Gollum got the ring in the first place,but if i'm not mistakened, he said that he got it for his birthday present, the only "precious" thing in his life.
I think he was just waiting, kind of playing with his food before he ate it. He expected to win and thought it might be fun since he thought up riddles in his spare time. When Bilbo won, Gollum thought he could simply get his ring and catch Bilbo invisibly. If i were bilbo i wouldn't have even stayed to see Gollum pattling towards me...

I think gollum was like, slightly happy that he actually had SOME company....I think i would have done the same except I don't think I'd be a ble to react quick enough to not get caught by gollum -.-
