After braving the Road of Trials, the hero transcends, achieving a higher place.
This is a point of realization in which a greater understanding is achieved. Armed with this new knowledge and perception, the hero is resolved and ready for the more difficult part of the adventure.
This transition may be symbolized with the change in appearance of the hero.

This might be when Bilbo takes the Arkenstone to Bard and the lake-men, he has definetly achied a higher place and is basked by the Elven-King and Gandalf later. The battle of 5 armies is to come too, a difficult part in the story.
"You are more worthy to wear the armouy of elf-princes then many that have looked more comely in it..." the Elvenking. It is beyond good or evil, (Thorin vs. Bard & Co.) and life and death I suppose.
