How did Gollum find the ring? And why does he love it so much?
I think he loves it so much because that's really the only thing there with him. I think he sees it as a form of protection, since it makes him invisible so he can get his food and get hide from goblins and stuff. So I think now that it's gone, he's going to have to use skill to get his food, instead of just a ring.
it was given to him as a present for his birthday (hard to imagine i know) so it has sentimental value and it was the only thing that helped him in the tunnel

He was "given" it for his birthday present -- technically he took it from friend. He loves it because the ring has the power to seduce someone with an obsession over it.
