On page 258 Balin says Dwarves can't talk to thrushes. Is it only because the thrushes talk too fast and complex? Are there other reasons?

Why do you think Bard came to the mountain with soldiers if all he wanted to do was talk with Thorin?

Even after Thorin refuses to give up his treasure, Bard remains calm and reasonable, (even though he puts the Mountain under siege). What would you do in Bard's place when denied the treasure that is rightfully yours? -Not care? -attack immediately? -agree with Bard?

On pg 283 in the triple b [Big Black Book] Thorin says "Who are youthat come in the gates of Thorin son of Thrain, King under the Mountain, and what do you desire?" and they answered nothing. Why do you you think that they didn't say anything at all?

On page 237 Thorin says, " To the treasure of my people no man has a claim, because Smaug who stole it from us also robbed him of life or home......but nothing we will give not even a loaf's worth. Why do you think Thorin is being so greedy? Do you agree with his actions and behavior?

On page 235 you can tell that the dwarves are having some conflicted opinions with Thorin about the treasure. They say that," they longed to escape from the dark fortress and to go downand join in the mirth and feasting by the fires. Some of the younger dwarves were moved in their hearts......but...

Err, okay, on page 265 in the LGB, it says "Long hours in the past days Thorin had spent in the treasury, and the lust of it was heavy on him." Do you think Thorin is the only one who is affected by the treasure to such an extent?

Throughout this chapter you have insights on the emotions of of the dwarves, Bilbo, and Bard. There's a great intensity going on. Do you think there will be a war between the two. Or possibly some interference? If so who's side do you pick?

What do you think will happen to the treasure?? Towards the end of the chapter when bard is talking to Thorin about getting some share in the treasure they ended by saying pretty much give us some of the treasure or we're enemies and there might be war. So what do you think Thorin will do?
