why did Bilbo take the arkenstone?

Why did Bilbo take the arkenstone? Do you think that the dwarves will find out? If so, what do you think that their reaction will be?

On page 214 it says that the heart of a dwarf becomes awakened when he sees gold and becomes suddenly boldand may become fierce. In Bilbos situation this was the case(even though he's a hobbit).

I think Biblo took the stone because he was overwhelmed by it. Page 237, my book, it says "At last he looked down upon it, and he caught his own breath." Also, "Suddenly Biblo's arm went towards it drawn by its enchantment." I do think the dwarves will find out sooner or later. My guess is that Thorin might get a little upset that Biblo did take the great stone.

If I were the drawrves, I'd feel aggrivated. But on page 239 (it says dwarves become 'suddenly bold, and he may become feirce' And to me that indicates that they are semi greedy but they win't like , do anything to Bilbo, just... take it back I guess.

I don't think he was being selfish. Thorin told him he could pick his share, so he did. He never said "pick anything you want except the Arkenstone" so why shouldn't Bilbo? If it is selfish of Bilbo to take it, then would also be selfish of Thorin to take it because has saved the dwarves, including Thorin, many times, and Bilbo was the only one brave enough to actually go down the tunnel, unlike Thorin who said " Now it is tome for our esteemed Mr. Baggins, who has proved himself a good companion on our long road, and a hobbit full of courage and resource far exceeding his size, and if I may say so possessed of good luck far exceeding the usual allowance- no wis the time for him to preform the service for which he was included in our Company; now is the time for him to earn his Reward." (page 212) which basically dumped all of the danger of facing the dragon on Bilbo. So Bilbo isn't really being all that selfish, because he has earned it more than any of the others.

Well, he found it when the dwraves weren't around and felt somewhat weird about having it, but I think he thought that he just could take one thing as an award for himself, but also since no one was watching. I think the dwarves would be angry for not telling that he had it and not trust him as their burglar.
Refer to pages 237 and 238 (haha) it says, "...'and I think I would choose this, if they took all the rest!' All the same he had an UNCOMFORTABLE feeling that he picking and choosing had not really been meant to include this marvellous gem, and that TROULBE would yet come of it."
See what I mean, old Katherine?

On page 375 it say "Suddenly Bilbo's arm.....,..his deepest pocket" So I think the Arkestone might have a spell or somthing put on it. I'm pretty sure the dwarves will find out in either a good way or a bad way. They might be happy it just depends on how Bilbo tells them or if they find out from another source.
